Carolyn’s
art career was influenced by a childhood in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where
she learned to love open spaces. She spent summers in New York’s
Adirondack Park. There she met and was mentored by Adirondack
watercolorist Jeanne Reynolds who taught her a devotion to realism and a
love of landscapes. She broadened her skills and gained confidence in her
art at Waynesburg College under the tutelage of her art teacher Dr. Susan
Phillips.
Carolyn lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan for some years and participated in
the art community there, principally through the Kalamazoo Art Center
where she taught colored pencil classes. She
recently moved to the Glen Arbor/Empire area of the Leelanau Peninsula
where she had fallen in love with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National
Lakeshore, an area that for years has attracted artists and visitors from
all over Michigan and the United States. She is drawn by the “light and
space” of Lake Michigan and the dunes.
Leelanau offers a variety of inspiring subjects for
Carolyn’s realistic drawings including wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and
abandoned buildings and old farms. “Interiors are fun because of how the
light and shadow define space and form.” She also enjoys the challenge of
drawing water and strives to capture its unusual quality in a number of
her pictures.
She says, “Living and working in paradise (Leelanau
county) would enhance anyone’s life, gifts and abilities. I love the dunes
and the shapes and curves of the land. I get to see beauty every day. I
get to smell the water, hear the birds, and experience life in a small
town.”
With her many pencils, Carolyn Hudson is an artist constantly striving to
recreate the special character of life around her. Success for her is when
her pictures “draw you in and make you feel as if you are there.”
Her art is displayed at Synchronicity Gallery in
Glen Arbor, MI and at the Michigan Artists Gallery in Suttons Bay, MI.
She is a Signature member of the Colored
Pencil Society and her work has been selected to exhibit at many juried
shows including the Colored Pencil Society of America International
Exhibition and Convention in Texas, CPSA Midwest Exhibition in Ohio and in
Chicago IL,
the Art Center, Old Forge NY, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts;
Faculty Show and the All Media Juried Exhibit 2001, Traverse City Arts
Council, Traverse City MI. Most recently, her
work has been selected for the 2005 Glen Arbor Art Association Music
Festival Poster. |
